Drinking Water from a small tractor
The drinking water vehicle, a small single-axle tractor available as a prototype, can sterilize drinking water in disaster regions. It can transport a compact membrane filtration system to the point of use. Its 7.5 kW three-phase generator also provides electricity. Using pre-filtering combined with a micro-filter unit, the vehicle can supply up to 2,000 liters of drinking water per hour, even from heavily contaminated and untreated water. A disinfection system ensures its longevity. Special foldable and transportable tanks for water treatment and storage have also been developed.
The vehicle was developed by the European Fountain Society in cooperation with the universities of Karlsruhe and Ruhuna after the tsunami catastrophe on Sri Lanka in 2004. The device is available for IWAO’s relief operations. A team of scientists from the University of Karlsruhe, later to become founding members of IWAO, had helped on-site with the water supply after the tsunami. When the team needed local partners, a cooperation between the universities arose. This cooperation soon went well beyond the initial emergency measures after the disaster. Joint research projects were started. One of them was the development of the drinking water vehicle as part of a dissertation at the University of Ruhuna. All its components are also available in emerging economies to enable these countries to build and maintain their own vehicles.
